Field Trip to Malaysia’s First High-Speed Rail

To celebrate International Youth Day and Malaysia’s 67th Independence Day in August 2024, Women in Rail Malaysia collaborated with YTL Construction, Express Rail Link (ERL) and ERL Maintenance Sdn Bhd (E-MAS) to organize an engaging field trip to Malaysia’s first High-Speed Rail. This special event, featuring the KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit operated by ERL, was open to all Women in Rail Malaysia members and their children aged 3-15 years. We were thrilled to have 60 participants join us for this memorable experience.

The visit took place at the ERL Depot in the E-MAS Air-Rail Complex at Salak Tinggi, giving participants a rare opportunity to explore a fully operational rail facility. The day kicked off with a safety briefing by E-MAS, ensuring everyone was well-prepared for the tour. Following this, Ms. Nina Jamil, Executive Director of Women in Rail Malaysia and Senior Communications Manager at YTL Construction, introduced Women in Rail Malaysia, sharing the organization’s mission and ongoing initiatives. She also highlighted YTL Construction’s exciting rail projects, including the ERL and the Gemas-Johor Bahru Double Track rail line. This was followed by an informative presentation by Ms. Puteri Elysya Hamzah on ERL’s operations and an explanation by Ms. Melati on the general functions of E-MAS, including their efforts in diversity and inclusion (D&I).

Participants were treated to an exclusive tour of the ERL facility, which included the Operations Control Centre (OCC), the main workshop and static train displays showcasing the Siemens and CRRC Changchun coaches used for KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit services. A standout moment was when attendees had the chance to step inside the trains and take photos, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the day-to-day operations and maintenance of Malaysia’s first High-Speed Rail system.

The field trip continued with refreshments in the cafeteria, where the children enjoyed a fun-filled coloring contest. 20 young participants displayed their creativity, with three top winners receiving special prizes and three others awarded consolation prizes. The day concluded with a prize-giving ceremony and closing remarks from Mr. Jayaraj, Maintenance Manager of E-MAS, who expressed his gratitude to everyone for their participation and enthusiasm.

This field trip was a clear reflection of Women in Rail Malaysia’s commitment to promoting STEM to younger generations. We are proud to have inspired future leaders in rail and transportation through this meaningful experience.
